ASGU is now fully live! This FREE 2-hour program covers all the basics needed to get started with a planted aquarium. No need to "figure it out". Simply follow the ASG method and you're guaranteed to be successful right out of the gate!
Sign up for your free ASG account to gain access to the ASG University, our Official Algae Guide, and even free support.
If you're on desktop, click on the log-in button in the header. If you are on a tablet or mobile device, open the menu in the upper left of the header, and you'll see the log in button in the upper right. Once logged in, use the down arrow in the log-in bar to navigate to the ASG University.
In the lighting section, we cover what PAR is. We also talk about light spectrums, why wattage and lumens are less important when selecting a light. Even talk about kelvin ratings. If you are selecting a light for a planted aquarium, you shouldn't miss this section.
In our CO2 section, we cover how to set up a full CO2 system. We talk about how much to inject using the PH drop method, and even why drop checkers and bubble counters are not a great way to make sure you are getting to that sweet spot of 30ppm.
In our filtration section, what a filter does for our aquarium. Why sponge filters are inadequate for a planted aquarium and even talk a little about hang-on-back (HOBs) filters. We then move into why we suggest canister filters and even how to set it up properly. The key to it all is 10x turnover.
The nutrients section of our course talks about LieBigs law of the minimum, and what his findings mean for our plants. We cover how to properly use liquid fertilisers to help feed our column and root feeding plants. We then finish it all off with cation exchange capacity (CEC), and how that effects certain plant types.
Lastly is water chemistry. We feel like this is the most overlooked aspect of keeping planted tanks because of how daunting water chemistry can be. We broke it down into simple-to-digest concepts that cover how to test your GH, KH, and PH. We then cover what to do if your parameters are too low or high.

The ASG Method completely demystified CO2 injection especially, when I knew I was at a crossroads in the hobby. I’m so grateful to have found it when I did and I’m excited to keep expanding on my knowledge as I apply it to my next aquarium!
